Customer Satisfaction

After a long search we found Crystal Woods website and commissioned Llewie to create a bespoke 15 bottle wine rack from a chestnut log that he selected. It was a pleasure to do business with Llewie.

His communications where excellent throughout the project, including photos and videos showing how the work was progressing. We were delighted with the result which truly demonstrated the high level of his craftsmanship.

How A Whole Tree Wine Rack Is Made

The creation of a finely crafted whole trunk wine rack is a laborious process that can take weeks of work.

Starting from sourcing a suitable tree trunk that needs to be locally sourced (Devon) and delivered to the workshop.

That trunk will need to be shaped, levelled, cleaned and marked up for its transformation into a wine rack.

All wood is imperfect so any areas of rot need to be identified, cleaned and stabilised. Any cracks in the stump that may get bigger as the trunk dries need to be made secure with hardwood ties to ensure the wood stays strong for the duration of its long life. The ties add both strength and character to the final outcome but also take a lot of time to do well.

Once the trunk is cleaned and marked up, the difficult process of drilling out the holes for the wine bottles begins.

After the trunk is completely stabilised with ties, cleaned, planed and course sanded it is moved indoors to the workshop for the finishing process to begin. Here the finishing process begins. The holes are refined, bevelled and further sanded. Also, the trunk itself undergoes many hours of sanding with increasingly fine grits until it reaches a high degree of finish.

Once the wine rack is ready it's given multiple coats of oil using a variety of processes. There are then specific periods of drying time needed between the numerous coats used. It's then left to dry for several days. Once all the coats have been applied the final checks are made before delivery.
